Evansburg State Park Edges and Skippack Creek's Valley
Many 1990s and 2000s homes back directly onto Evansburg's woods or the fields around it. Blacklegged ticks wait in leaf litter at that edge, and Pennsylvania reports some of the highest Lyme disease counts in the country.
Skippack Creek and its wet bottomland breed mosquitoes through summer, and field mice from park meadows move into garages each fall. Homes approaching 30 years old are also losing their builder termite protection.
Skippack grew from farmland into large-lot subdivisions in the 1990s and 2000s, so most houses are big colonials on poured basements with walkout doors, attached three-car garages and long decks. That much foundation perimeter, plus mulch beds and landscape stone, gives odorous house ants and termites a lot of ground contact to work, and finished walkout basements hide the evidence.
Water moves through the township three ways: Skippack Creek through the state park, the Perkiomen along the western edge near Graterford, and the stormwater basins and swales built with each development. All three breed mosquitoes, and the creek floodplains stay soft after storms. Deer that browse between Evansburg and the farm fields carry blacklegged ticks into yards that look manicured but end at a woodline or meadow, and yellow jackets settle into dry lawn edges by August.

Yellow Jacket Control
Ground-nesting yellow jackets settle in dry lawn edges and under landscape stone around Skippack's newer homes, and by August a mower passing a hidden entrance can set off the whole colony.

Ant Control
Odorous house ants nest under landscape stone and mulch around big Skippack foundations, then trail inside along walkout basement doors and slab edges after spring and summer rain.

Questions from Skippack Township homeowners
Is tick control worth it for homes next to Evansburg State Park?
For most park-edge homes, yes. Blacklegged ticks are common in the leaf litter and brush where lawns meet the park's woods. Mowing, clearing leaves and keeping play areas away from the edge help. A targeted tick control treatment along that border adds protection through the season.
Do newer Skippack homes get mice?
Yes. Newer construction is tighter, but mice still find gaps at garage door seals, dryer vents, utility lines and the seam where siding meets the foundation. A mouse fits through an opening about 1/4 inch wide. Homes beside open fields or the park see the most activity from October through winter.
