Green Lane Reservoir shoreline and Upper Perkiomen woods

The reservoir's coves and the creeks feeding it hold still water, so mosquitoes are a summer fixture near Green Lane Park. The park's woods and the township's wooded hills also carry deer and blacklegged ticks.

Farm fields between subdivisions shelter mice that head for late-1980s garages and basements each fall, and damp soil against decks and sill plates of that era gives subterranean termites a way in.

Green Lane Reservoir was created by damming the Perkiomen Creek for water supply, and its long, narrow arms reach up wooded side valleys where the water is shallow and sheltered from wind. Those arms warm quickly in June, and the reservoir level can drop in dry late summers, leaving muddy margins that breed mosquitoes. Wooded ridges on both sides of the water remain largely wooded parkland, which keeps deer numbers high.

Houses from the late 1980s here are often on lots of an acre or more with private wells, septic fields and wood decks facing the woods. Firewood stacked under those decks, stumps left from clearing and dead limbs overhanging the roof give carpenter ants a start before they move into soft deck boards and window framing. Upland weather in this corner of Montgomery County is noticeably colder in winter, so mice, stink bugs and boxelder bugs press indoors early each fall.

Pennsburg, East Greenville and Green Lane Park

Green Lane Park, run by Montgomery County, surrounds much of the reservoir. The boroughs of Pennsburg, East Greenville and Red Hill line Route 29 through the middle of the township. Route 29 (Gravel Pike) runs up the Perkiomen valley through Red Hill, Pennsburg and East Greenville toward Palm and the Lehigh County line, and Route 663 links the boroughs east to the Turnpike at Quakertown. The township borders both Berks and Lehigh counties, which makes it one of the farthest corners of our service area. Students attend the Upper Perkiomen School District, along with the three boroughs the township surrounds. Outside the boroughs, land use is woods, farms, the reservoir and owner-occupied homes on large lots. That points the requests we expect toward mosquito and tick treatments near the water, yellow jacket and wasp nests on wooded lots, carpenter ants in decks, mice after harvest and termite checks on homes now about thirty-five years old.

Questions from Upper Hanover Township homeowners

Are mosquitoes worse for homes near Green Lane Reservoir?

Usually, yes, though much of the biting comes from water in your own yard rather than the reservoir itself. Shallow coves, creek pools and wet spots near the shoreline add to what clogged gutters, tarps and planters already breed. Dumping standing water weekly and treating shady resting areas from late spring keeps evenings outside tolerable.

Do yellow jackets nest in the ground on wooded Upper Hanover lots?

Often. Yellow jackets nest in the soil along wood edges and in old rodent burrows, while paper wasps build under deck railings and eaves. Nests peak in late summer, when mowing over one is a common way to get stung. Mark the spot and keep kids away until it's treated; see yellow jacket control. Call 911 for a severe allergic reaction.
